Program Overview
The Forensic Program provides specialized mental health services to the criminal justice system and people with serious mental illness who are involved with the legal system. Referrals to our program are ordered by the courts.
Patients may require assessments and/or treatment and rehabilitation. Court-ordered assessments include fitness to stand trial and/or criminal responsibility. Fitness to stand trial relates to a person's mental capacity to understand the nature, object or consequences of what happens in court or communicate and instruct a lawyer. Criminal responsibility relates to an individual's mental capacity at the time of the offence and appreciation of the nature or quality of the act and knowing that it is wrong. Patients admitted to our program may also be on a disposition order of the Ontario Review Board after having been found unfit to stand trial or not criminally responsible.
