Program Overview
The REDP offers services to children, adolescents and adults suffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and mixed syndromes and their families. Our catchment area is the northeast part to the province (LHIN 13). This encompasses an area beginning north of Huntsville (not including Muskoka) and stretching to the James Bay coast.
The mandate is to provide:
- Out-patient Clinical Service Delivery (assessment, individual, group and family therapy)
- Regional Consultation, Training and Capacity Building
- Community Education/Research & Program Evaluation
Interdisciplinary Assessment
Most patients attending the REDP undergo a comprehensive assessment that may consist of any or all of the following:
- Nutrition Assessment
- Psychological Assessment
- Family Assessment
- Nursing Assessment
- Medical Assessment (by patient's family physician/nurse practitioner)
- Pediatric Assessment/Consultation
- Psychosocial Assessment
- Psychiatric Consultation
Following completion, the REDP team reviews the assessments jointly in order to formulate recommendations for treatment goals and a plan of care. A member of the team then reviews the assessments, recommended goals and treatment plan with the patient. Treatment is only initiated with the patient's consent.
Referral Process
The REDP accepts referrals from the following sources:
- The patient seeking help
- Family members/friends of people with eating disorders (provided that the patient is willing to attend)
- Medical practitioners ( family physicians and specialists)
- Other therapists, counsellors
- Community agencies
- Regional contacts
All patients attending the REDP must be willing to be monitored by their family physician/nurse practioner as necessary and to authorize liaison between the REDP and the doctor/nurse practioner to ensure their medical safety during treatment.
An intake clinician will receive the necessary information and arrangements are made to contact the patient by telephone at a convenient time to discuss the referral.
Next, an appointment is scheduled for a more in-depth interview. Regional patients may either travel to Sudbury or have the multidisciplinary assessments done via videoconference.
The purpose of the initial telephone intake and subsequent interview is:
- to obtain a comprehensive history from the client including an elaboration of the eating problem
- to determine patient suitability and readiness for further assessment and treatment
- to introduce the client to the Program's facility and programs
- to recommend community services which may be helpful to the patient.
Although the Program recommends to patients that pursuing treatment as soon as possible is important for recovery, it should be noted that patients are not obligated to attend following intake. Attendance is always voluntary. Intake is designed as an information sharing process that allows prospective patients along with the Clinical Team to make decisions about ongoing care.
