Program Overview
The Regional Aboriginal Mental Health Service (RAMHS) began developing in November 2006 to provide culturally appropriate supports to Aboriginal patients as they return home.
During our first year, we have been engaged in consultations with the First Nations communities and Aboriginal organizations throughout the northeast. In collaboration with the communities and organizations we will be prioritizing service areas and establishing service agreements with those communities and organizations who want support from RAMHS.
Internally, we are involved in developing and facilitating education opportunities for staff and board members regarding Aboriginal cultures and worldviews.
Services Provided
The bulk of services to be offered by RAMHS have yet to be determined by the Aboriginal communities and organizations that we are consulting with. Examples of current activities include:
- clinical supervision and consultation
- workshops for building specific skills
- public education
- involvement in community and professional event planning
We will provide case management services to Aboriginal patients in the Northeast Mental Health Centre as they are preparing to discharge from the hospital, with ongoing follow-up in their communities.
Internally, we are engaged in developing and facilitating education for NEMHC staff, and in supporting student placements from the local colleges and universities.
